Siena is home to the University of Siena — founded in 1240 and one of Italy's oldest publicly-funded universities — alongside the University for Foreigners of Siena, a public university specialising in teaching Italian language and culture to international students, which makes Siena a genuinely natural fit for anyone combining language study with a degree track. The city itself is a compact, car-free medieval hill town in Tuscany, built around the famous shell-shaped Piazza del Campo.
