Parthenope University of Naples
Parthenope started life in 1920 as the "Royal Naval Technical Institute," founded by Royal Decree to train officers for the merchant navy and shipping-company managers — split from the outset into a teaching section and a shipping-and-insurance management section. Scientists here developed Italy's first radar during the Second World War, and the university only took its present name, expanding into a broader institution, in 1999.

About the university
That naval and maritime heritage is still what sets Parthenope apart from Naples' other two public universities: today it teaches economics, nautical sciences, international business, law, and environmental sciences to around 15,000 students, with the maritime specialism running through its identity even as its range has broadened.
