Studying in Italy from Egypt
The overall application process is the same everywhere — choose a course, pre-enrol through Universitaly, get your documents legalised, apply for your visa. What genuinely differs by country is which office handles each of those steps, and this page covers exactly that for Egypt.
Which office handles your case
The Italian Embassy in Cairo holds consular authority over most of the country, including Alexandria — the Alexandria office is an honorary consulate reporting to Cairo, not an independent one. There are also honorary consulates or vice-consulates in Sharm El Sheikh, Luxor, and Hurghada for more limited local services.
Apostille or full legalisation?
Egypt is not a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention. Egyptian documents need full legalisation: authentication by Egypt's own Ministry of Foreign Affairs first, then an Italian translation, then legalisation by the Italian Embassy's own office in Egypt.
Where you apply for your visa
Italian visa applications in Egypt go through Almaviva's visa application centres, in Cairo and Alexandria — not VFS Global, despite some third-party sites claiming otherwise. Confirm you're booking through the embassy-listed centre before paying for an appointment anywhere else.
Getting your Declaration of Value
A Declaration of Value is issued in person at the Cairo embassy, after your diploma has been authenticated by Egyptian MOFA and translated into Italian — book this appointment well ahead, since the embassy runs it on a limited weekly schedule, not on demand.
